Extra! Extra! Read All About it!

Since I didn’t post until late today, I decided to put up a second post directing you  to a revised version of my fiction. In the category section labeled Fiction-Read and React, I have a revised version of Somewhere: Part 1. Please check it out and leave comments. Part 2 is slowly coming together as I am trying to set up the background of the character. 🙂

Below is the link directing you towards the revised edition:

  1. I like it, it definitely reads better than the first version you had up. Looking forward to seeing Part 2 🙂

  2. I’ve been having some help from a few class mates. I’m struggling a little to get the story moving because I want to give background to the character. Yet, I feel like 7 pages is too much background until the action starts.

    • Ahhh, yeah it’s tricky getting that bit right. How big are you trying to make the story? For me personally I always start with the action, and try and reveal the background inbetween the action, through the ways that the character reacts, that sort of thing. Like the story I’m writing at the moment, the first scene is just the main character being thrown in jail, in a cell next to a friend, and then arguing with the friend that it’s all his fault, as it’s gradually revealed the main character is also drunk. He doesn’t mention family or anything until the next chapter I think? (Mind, I am rushing that story, but still, you probably get what I mean).
It’s different for each person though, it depends on the pace you want to set for the story I think. Some authors spend half their story setting it up, and can get away with it too if it’s kept interesting, and is relevant when the action finally does happen.

      • Well, I did a little experiment that my mentor taught me and I separated the action from the background so-to-speak into a list. However, it is only a short story and I don’t want to dwell on the character getting sick too much. At the same time I can’t just say bam and now my character is sick. See, Part 1 is present time for the character. Part 2 is a flash back leading up to Part 1, then Part 3 is a continuation of where Part 1 left off. So, I made it entertaining/confusing and complicated for myself as the writer. I just have to finish part 2 and then I’ll put it up and let you guys decide 😛

  3. Ahhh sounds interesting! Well I am definitely curious to see the rest of it! 🙂 It is always hard to do short stories, I find I always want to complicate my characters and storylines and it is so hard to restrain myself from doing so 😛
