How to Register the California Blue Cross NPI Number

As insurance companies have moved from Tax ID or Social Security numbers to NPI (National Identity Provider) numbers there has been a lot of confusion and updating of computer records. California Blue Cross Blue Shield now requires all medical service providers to register their NPI number and use that number on all insurance claims submitted.

1. Obtain your NPI number from the National Plan and System Provider Enumeration. If you do not have an NPI number, you can sign up with one of this agency.

2. Contact California Blue Cross in whatever form you are required to submit. If you are recording non-pharmaceutical interventions for multiple providers from the same practice or facility, California Blue Cross will provide you with a standard Excel spreadsheet. Call 800-480-1221 to request spreadsheets for registering multiple providers.

3. Submit your NPI record by fax or mail. Include your NPI number, tax identification number, and contact information in case there are any questions.

Fax the registration to 916-350-8860, Attention: NPI Project.
